Abstract
The author of this article describes the turn that has occurred at the second Vatican Council concerning the issue of religious freedom when the Catholic Church left the old conviction that the right rests with the truth and error can’t have any right, so that catholic governments are obliged to suppress the practice of non-catholic religions, and instead adopted a new view in acknowledging that the law and governmental actions do not deal with the relations of men and women with abstract values. Laws regulate the relations between human beings and there everybody has to acknowledge the convictions others posses and can not force them to follow his or her own conviction as the only one that is right.
