Abstract
In modern usage, politics refers narrowly to the political power that belongs only to politicians or the few who distribute and exercise political power for the sake of society in general. It is not surprising, therefore, that people in general or citizens in particular withdraw themselves from politics and become apathetic. Conversely, withdrawal from politics was not possible in ancient times since politics referred to all aspects of human activity. As a result, one cannot escape from being involved in politics in one way or another. Aristotle adopted this idea in his ethical and political writings and suggested that participation in the life of polis is undeniable. However, Aristotle’s attitude towards the value of politics and political activities seems ambivalent. This article is designed to explain this ambivalence on the ground that in his discussion of civil participation, Aristotle advocated participation but qualified that recommendation with the recognition of the other goods. Aristotle does not wholeheartedly support the value of civil participation
