Abstract
A discourse to develop a Theology of the Sea begin by intersecting views on two main elements: the “meaning of the sea” and the “role of God” in today’s society (represented by the Waibalun society) and in the biblical society (represented by the ancient Israelite society). Without discussing God’s involved role, reflections on the sea would only be an imaginative essay, while the role of God which is reflected without starting from the context of people’s life with the sea, is nothing more than a mere reflection of faith. Theology of the Sea can be formulated because the sea provides something good for people who live around it. Thus, human experience and the truth about God’s role in and with the sea become the starting point (terminus a quo) in building a Theology of the Sea. This research employs qualitative method, including interviews and literature study. In the interview method, the author interviewed several informants (Waibalun people) who had concepts and experiences about the sea. Additionally, a comprehensive literature review was conducted, examining relevant texts such as books, journal articles, lecture materials, and manuscripts related to Catholic Theology, biblical hermeneutics, and cultural anthropology, all directly related to the theme of the writing. The results of this research show that Theology of the Sea attempted to analyze, in the light of faith, human interactions with the sea, while simultaneously highlighting God’s role in human life in relation to the sea. This approach to theology from and with the sea represents an appreciation for God’s creation of the sea and acknowledges the experiences and reflections of all communities involved with the sea. By applying the Theology of the Sea, society simultaneously fulfills an ecotheological mission which is its responsibility towards God and each other.
