Abstract

This mixed method study was conducted for the following goals: first, to determine the emotional intelligence and interpersonal relationship profiles of the SVD seminarians in Flores, Indonesia; second, to find out how seminarians describe their emotional life and interpersonal relationships experienced in the seminary; third, to assess the seminarians’ needs, concerns, and problems and their suggestions to meet their needs, concerns, and problems; and fourth, to design a counseling intervention program to answer the seminarians’ needs, concerns, and problems particularly in the areas of emotional intelligence and interpersonal relationship. The process of study consisted of three phases. Phase I - Profiles: the seminarians’ emotional intelligence and interpersonal relationship profiles were measured by the General Emotional Intelligence Scale (GEIS) and Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation Behavior (FIRO-B). The participants of this phase were 75 seminarians, second to fourth year level (25 seminarians of each level). Phase II - The seminarians’ description of their emotional life and interpersonal relationship in the seminary; their needs, concerns, and problems; and their suggestions to meet their needs, concerns, and problems. Eighteen participants were selected based on the result of the GEIS: 6 participants from each level (top 3 and bottom 3) were interviewed. Phase III - A counseling intervention program. Based on the results of Phase I and Phase II, a counseling intervention program was developed to enhance the seminarians’ emotional intelligence and improve their skills in building interpersonal relationship across different stages of formation.
