Abstract
This article examines the concept of populism and the relevance of the theory and practice of populism to challenge and refresh the practices of democracy. Based on the concepts of the radical democracy and left populism of Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau, this research on the one hand makes some suggestions to enhance the democratic participation of the people and in this way to improve the quality of democracy in Indonesia, which is being co-opted by predatory oligarchy. On the other hand, based on the practices of democracy in Indonesia the article shows as well the limitations of the concept of left populism of Chantal Mouffe and Ernesto Laclau in exploring the contribution of populism to the democracy
