Abstract
It is undeniable that modern liberal ideas have won sympathy and recognition because of its aim to promote the good of individuals and its success in extending the role of reason to improve human life. However, the question must be asked in regard to their understanding of individuals and reason itself? How do they understand them? Pope’s speech delivered before scientists at the University of Regensburg, Germany, may have been controversial, but he made some valid and profound claims against modern idea of subyectivity that has given rise to the problem of secular individualistic humanism and instrumental reason, two celebreated achievements of modernity. This paper aims to explicitate these problems in order to show its limitations that must be alerted.
