Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the ideology of Islamic radicalism from the lens of Karl Popper's critical rationalism. Islamic radicalism is an ideological concept with doctrinal characteristics. This means that the content or basic principles in Islamic radicalism are rooted in the teachings of the Holy Quran. In radical Islamism, the verses of the Quran are interpreted literally. As a result, the adherents of radical Islamism claim their ideology as the absolute truth. Based on this paper, it is found that radical Islamic groups realize their ideology repressively, through violence, discriminatory actions, and intimidation of certain collective identities. In order to criticize the ideological content, the author uses Karl Popper's critical rationalism theory. Karl Popper's critical rationalism is a thought that rejects claims to absolute truth. According to Popper, truth is tentative and open to be analyzed. Starting from the reference of Popper's theoretical paradigm, the author finds that the claim of ownership of absolute truth by radical Islamists is contrary to the nature of truth.
