Abstract

After receiving the Lesser Sundas’ mission area from the Congregation of the Propaganda Fide in 1912, SVD missionaries intended to work wholeheartedly in this mission area. Mission work was planned as well as possible. But on the way, there was World War I which changed all plans. The question to be researched is how can SVD survive in the difficulties of missionary work affected by war? The method used to answer this question is a qualitative-inductive and qualitative-deductive method through research on various archival materials as well as literature that supports the theme studied. The above question was answered through the discovery of various heroic efforts made by SVD missionaries both at the local and international levels. These efforts are determining the right initial steps before starting mission work, relentless efforts to bring missionary personnel to the Lesser Sunda Islands in the midst of war difficulties and fruitful collaboration with indigenous people (catechists) in the mission work. All of this has ensured the continuity of the SVDs mission work in a situation that was too difficult to deal with. Keywords: War, Missionaries, Islam, Catechists
