Abstract

This article aims to reveal the reality of violence against women in the Dioceses of Larantuka and Maumere, NTT Province, and the Role of the Commission on Gender and Women’s Empowerment (KGPP) in preventing and handling it. Using qualitative approach, this study shows that gender based violence still exists in both dioceses. The forms of violence are physical, psychological and economic violence (neglect). The cases are found both in domestic and public spheres, but mostly isiin domestic sphere. Regarding the role of KGPP in dealing violence against women, data shows that KGPP has been organizationally equipped with a clear management structure, vision and mission, and work program. Even so, the role of the KGPP has not yet been maximized due to various challenges and obstacles, including: the absence of full-time and qualified personnel, not yet optimal socialization or awareness, and the existence of a ‘silence’ culture among women as a result of domination of patriarchal culture in both dioceses. This study recommends the importance of enhancing capacity building of KGPP and strengthening networking and collaboration with other entities.
