Abstract
Mystical experience is not just a spiritual phenomenon in our life, nor simply a religious experience. Thecharacteristics of mysticism as direct, passive, momentary, also include a noetic aspect. This latter indicates anatural human characteristic to transcend the world in order to approach perfection in union with the Divine. This characteristic of mystical experience can be understood philosophically; moreover, mystical practicesover time have been long influenced by philosophy. Mysticism can be seen as an object of philosophy in the sense of the relating the human spirit with the Divine through contemplation and love. John of the Cross(1542-1591), a Spanish mystic, doctor of the Church and poet, in his work Ascent of Mount Carmel , outlinesa synthesis of his teaching about the spiritual life (active contemplation) leading to union with God. God isviewed symbolically as “ the dark night of the soul ”. God’s unlimited nature can be reached only by a soul that has been cleansed in the process by grace. God, the Absolute, is the dark night for whom the soul is at complete peace only when living within God
