Abstract

The “Semana-Santa“ (Holy Week) Celebration in Larantuka, History and Liturgy serves as the title of this study. It points to paraliturgical, and popular religiosity in Larantuka (Flores), under Portuguese influence since the sixteenth century and present until now. However it is de facto in Larantuka that many local traditions survive in Christian devotion during the Holy Week. The initial question of this study emerged against the background of inculturation between peoples, despite some basic religious and cultural differences, and how it developed in Larantuka. This inculturation of the “Semana-Santa“ celebration, which falls between of liturgy and folklore, is examined in the specific context of popular religiosity of the Holy Week, and encompasses three aspects: The first aspect concerns the Christian faith, that is deeply rooted through procession – to remember the passion and the resurrection of Christ, the compassion and the Easter joy of Mary – through prayer and singing, based on the primary texts.
